Internships in New York
On my Gatorade-induced internship application rampage, I managed to land positions all across the globe. From Norfolk, Virginia to Hokkaido in Japan, I had offers of employment spanning from 3 weeks to 3 months. One of which included New York City (the big apple for god’s sake!), which has been one of my dreams since I started my design program, or so I thought…
So here’s the deal: I was offered two internships in New York from two different agencies, both paid (awesome). I had practically packed my bags until I got my offer from Critical Mass, who was my end-all-be-all agency, so I dropped my bags and tried to rearrange my schedule. Managing to settle my schedule to doing 3 consecutive internships back-to-back until the beginning of school, I was content with myself—I had gotten everything I wanted.
So what’s the problem? …I’m strung out and exhausted. I jumped from exam season with two part-time design jobs into a full-time internship, and then into another full-time internship. I realized that if I want to make my final year in YSDN count for something, I need to be in the right mindset, which wouldn’t be the case if I were to do my last internship in New York.
So, regretfully, I’ve declined my offers from New York to relax a bit before my final year of school. I’m expecting to go on a road trip to Vancouver and on vacation to Cuba in those three short weeks—I guess the over-planning doesn’t stop with work.
New York will be there when I get back.
