Marketplace Internationalization
News coverage:
FB News
Facebook’s e-commerce platform, Marketplace, launched in 2016 and quickly grew in North America. As a part of their plan to expand to countries outside of the U.S. and Canada, our team was the first to build the foundation for scaling to international countries. With the goal to propose a long-term strategy for country expansion, create a process for market opportunity sizing, and estimate expansion success over time.
I worked with a fantastic team of Data Scientists, Engineers, PMs, TPMs, Researchers, Content Strategists, and the entire Marketplace design team, as well as the wonderful designers on the i18n team and Whatsapp team at Facebook.
We worked synchronously to determine near-term optimizations like localized currency, automated translations in Messenger chat, support for new goods and resellers, intergrations with Whatsapp, secure scam detection, and identity protection. All the while determining the strategy to capture international markets by 2025.
From our work, we were able to ship Marketplace to 19 new countries in EMEA and LATAM.
